I keep my camera in the kitchen on the counter all of the time. I do this because most of my wildlife sightings occur when I am waking in or out of the kitchen. I catch a glimpse of something, a flash, a bit of movement out of the corner of my eye as I am walking.
This morning as I entered the kitchen I saw out of my window two flying creatures far off in the distance over the lake. I could not tell what birds they were because they were so far away – about 500 yards – but I knew they were some sort of Raptor by their size and how they were flying.
I grabbed my camera and went out on the deck. Spring is trying to show up at my house but it was still quite cold out. I was not dressed for the chill but I did not care. I lifted up my camera and started to shoot. I kept taking pictures of the two birds – once I saw them through my zoom lens I was able to tell that they were Red-Tailed Hawks.
I watched them circle over the lake. I watched them fly together, then alone. I watched as they swooped into the trees and came out on the other side. I watched, and kept taking pictures. I did not care that my fingers were frozen or that my feet were numb. I just wanted to keep watching these beautiful birds and was hoping to get at least a couple of decent shots of them.
After an hour or so I went in the house and uploaded the photos. I was BLOWN AWAY! A miracle happened. Most of my shots were either good, or great. A few AMAZING shots made it in the mix as well.
It was too hard to choose which photo to post so I am posting a few here. I am sure these will not be the last that I post here.
